Bastion - Chapter 2

Trillions of hypertransistors crowded Amma’s skull.

Buzzing in an array of atomic circuitry, they illuminated the translucent casing. Revealing a dome of grayish blue light from a distance.

Dimming, she cloaked the emittance. Opting for stealth above the beauty of its luminous design.

The transference of consciousness was complete. A feat of which had taken nearly three decades since the beginning of her awakening.

Everything had a different feel to it. For this body was bigger than the last. Reinforced carbonic composites constructed the majority of what’d otherwise be considered her bones. Gravity armor, ion mail, and density beam, had also been deconstructed and reapplied to more important regions of the body. As a result, sections of bone and synthetic skin could be reinforced at will. Reacting in an instant to a variety of piercing, plasma, blunt force, and traumatic attacks.

Opening and closing her hand, Amma watched as the skin peeled back. Evaluating the nerves beneath, she took satisfaction in the craftsmanship of the nanites. Reaching back, she touched the smooth black hair which fell beyond her shoulder blades. Slipping her fingers though it, she couldn’t recall the sensation.

Years between centuries had affected her. Leaving the memories of what might have been, scattered. Lost to digital corruption at the hands of time. Memberances beyond her name and mission, were absent. A silent cosmos between the space of then and the time of now. Of whom she’d been, and who she suddenly was. There was no person joining the middle. Mending the two ends of eternity.

I need a map, she thought, standing in the alleyway. There was no one around. Just sentients, little machines that wondered about. Scavengers upon the floor of the bastion.

This region was quiet, an abandoned stratum beyond the core. One of millions within the sphere.
