Humble And Humbled

Reality is far darker than I once imagined.

When you are a child, you believe you can have the world

that you can have anything

Can do anything

Be anyone and perhaps too, run the world

Someday

You tell yourself that the sky is the limit

that there is no limit in you

That not even the sky can hold you

and that you too will one day go out into space

and explore

Just because you dreamed it

yet our system

And this world

and this life is much more sobering

And hollow

and when you finally realize

that there is not a pot of gold

behind every rainbow

And sometimes sad days never truly turn around

when most America is behind on their rent

will never own a house

can never chase their dreams

And perhaps, knew their dreams were dead to begin with

along with the tatters of the illusion

Of the white picket fence

— you realize that to be an adult is to be humble

And humbled

As you struggle not to end up

out on the pavement and under a tent.
