Wall of Silence: An Ode to Ghosting
It is unusual, this enemy.
It isn’t physical and yet… there it stands. So resolute in its conviction, that even time cannot wear it. Smooth to the touch, I press against it. Unimpressed, the marble slab stains white against my palms of patience. Impenetrable in its defiance, I can do nothing but wait. Wait… and wait within the hollow confines of its halls.
Pacing back and forth, I await a response; a simple reply. Weary, I continue to walk, tap my feet, check my phone but… the wall remains. It holds its bearing, as I begin to lose mine. Eyes shifting, it watches. Staring beyond the vacuum of my shaky soul. Insulted, I grit my teeth and throw a tantrum. Lashing out, empty hands slap marble. It fails to crack, to fracture, or even to shake.
Dismayed, I break, crashing onto the floor. Shattering, pieces scatter as I glance down. Pieces of me; my pride, my sorrow, my arrogance. They are my essence, the ego that I gaze upon. Reaching down, my fingers slip beyond the edges. In between the glass, lies the truth. The bleeding remains of a broken heart.
